What to do if a HSE Inspector calls

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) proactively carry out thousands of workplace inspections in all industries and sectors throughout the UK each year.  The purpose of these inspections is to ensure people are being kept safe and healthy at work. Currently, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have several campaigns of targeted inspections in certain sectors including Construction, Waste and Recycling and Schools.

If you are an employer or someone in control of a workplace, do you know what to expect when a health and safety inspector calls at your workplace?

What you need to know when a health and safety inspector visits your workplace.

• The HSE inspector can visit at any reasonable time, with or without notice.
• Whilst on the premises, they can ask you about your workers and what they do.
• Look at any possible health and safety risks arising from the work you are doing on site.
• Look at any machinery and equipment you are using on site.
• Review records and other documents.
• Take photographs whilst they walk around site.
• Talk to your workers or representatives.

Also the inspector will want to know about the main health and safety issues in your workplace. As well as your knowledge or experience of health and safety.

Furthermore, the inspector may also discuss with you, things like safety standards, guidance and everyday health and safety practices in your industry.

What happens if the health and safety inspector finds something wrong?

The Inspector may act if they have found you are doing something that breaks the law.  Also, the inspector may tell you to stop a dangerous activity immediately,  provide advice verbally or following the visit write to you listing the improvements that could be made to health and safety within your workplace.  Other notices may be issued depending on the findings of their visit.

So if an Inspector visits your site, do not panic!  Ensure you co-operate with them fully as they are there to help keep your workplace safe.
