The NEBOSH National Diploma (E-learning) is NEBOSH’s flagship course and is specifically designed for health and safety professionals. Since its introduction in 1988 it is the most popular qualification of its kind, with over 10,000 students having successfully gained the Diploma. Importantly, the qualification meets the requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Who should attend?

This NEBOSH National Diploma is a perfect choice for anyone who wants to make health and safety their career.

The course will build upon the knowledge provided by the NEBOSH General Certificate (or similar level 3 health and safety qualification).

Therefore, it is particularly relevant for:

  • Health and safety professionals or those who wish to be one, and, or
  • People with health and safety responsibilities who want to gain an in-depth understanding

Course Content

Specifically, the NEBOSH National Diploma qualification looks at “general workplace issues” so that candidates can apply their learning in the many different sectors in which health and safety professionals may work. 

Hence, when you complete the qualification, you will be able to:

  • understand how to apply health and safety legislation in a workplace and the possible enforcement actions that could be taken, and
  • identify and effectively communicate relevant health and safety information, and
  • advise on a range of common workplace health and safety issues including how to asses, control and monitor these, and
  • develop a health and safety policy strategy (including proactive safety, Corporate Social Responsibility and the change management process), and
  • contribute to a risk management strategy, and
  • promote a positive health and safety culture, and
  • develop and audit health and safety management systems, and
  • maintain individual and organisational health and safety competence, and
  • manage contractors and supply chains to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Certification

The assessments focus on the application of knowledge to help you prepare for the health and safety tasks faced in the workplace.

Assessment Format

The NEBOSH National Diploma units will be in the following way:

 ND1 – Know – workplace health and safety principles

 Assignment – workplace-based tasks together with simulations and reflective statements and a research topic

 ND2 – Do – controlling workplace health issues

 Scenario-based case study

 ND3 – Do – controlling workplace safety issues

 Scenario-based case study

You will undertake the assessments using NEBOSH’s online portal, and submitted back via the same platform.

Each assessment is a large undertaking. On this basis, NEBOSH anticipate that it will take you around 60 hours to complete the ND1 assignment and 40 hours each for the ND2 and ND3 case studies.

Therefore, the time-period given for which you need to complete each assessment reflects this:

ND1: 6 weeks (30 working days)
ND2: 4 weeks (20 working days)
ND3: 4 weeks (20 working days)

Duration

The qualification requires a minimum of 191 taught hours, plus 144 recommended self-study hours and 140 assessment hours.

Depending on how much time to can devote to your studies, the course should take you between 12-18 months to complete.

FAQ's

What will I gain from this Qualification?

Firstly, the NEBOSH takes your health and safety knowledge to a higher level, helping you effectively manage and advise on risks in the workplace. Secondly, it will improve your skills as a health and safety practitioner and increase confidence in your abilities. Finally, the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is accepted by IOSH as meeting the requirements for Graduate Membership (GradIOSH).

Where do I undertake the exams?

The exams are completed online via the NEBOSH online platform.  The exams are released on a specific date, and candidates are then given approximately 6 weeks for ND1 and 4 weeks for ND2 & ND3 to submit there work back to the platform. Importantly, only Diploma learners who have enrolled with NEBOSH through an accredited Learning Partner are eligible to register for Diploma assessments. Therefore, you must be enrolled before the deadline of the assessment you wish to register for.

How long will it take?

The course is flexible, and as such, allows you to complete it in a time period to suit you. Normally, this will be between one to two years but depends upon your current workload and the amount of time each candidate can give to their studies. 

The suggested time spent on the qualification is about 480 hours. 

Entry requirements

Whilst there are no qualification entry requirements, it is strongly recommended learners have undertaken the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. Moreover, the syllabus assumes that learners will have this level of prior learning, such as, another Level 3 H&S qualification.

Additionally, it is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. Therefore, NEBOSH recommends that learners undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 or higher in IELTS tests.

What support will I receive?

You will be assigned a designated Diploma Tutor who will monitor your progress throughout your learning. They will provide you with an induction, and they will respond to your questions and queries when necessary. We will do our very best to ensure you are well prepared for gaining the qualification.
